Airport History

  • Hans Hannemann and Red Schroeder – “The Founding Fathers”

        –      Bond Election - $95k and 360 acres

        –      1300 votes (passed by 19 votes)

        –      Designed after the Army Air Corps design (3 runways)

  • 1948 – Completed in May (1 runway/3000’)
  • 1978 – Extended Runway to 3800’ (Federal Funded)
  • 1990s – Gillespie County hired a full-time Airport Manager
  • 1992 – Constructed taxiway and extended Runway to 4600’
  • 1994 – Constructed Ramp/taxiway to FBO
  • 2002 – Extended Taxiway , installed a new aerodrome beacon and extended Runway to 5001’
  • 2011 – Resurfaced Runway, taxiway and ramps
  • 2012 – Constructed the Helipad; Installed LED runway lights (first in TX)
  • 2017 – Constructed Tx A&M Forest Service Ramp; Constructed north “Coffee Mug” Taxiway; Renovated the drainage flume on north ramp
  • Future Projects –

       –      2019-2020 – building “Buffalo Wallow” Ramp and new detention pond

       –      2021-2022 – Pavement resurfacing
