We hear a lot about the importance of recycling—and with good reason. It helps to reduce the amount of trash we send to our landfills and conserves natural resources. However, it’s important to remember that there are two other Rs—reduce and reuse—which are even more effective ways to protect our environment.  Help spread the word to friends and neighbors.  Thank you for supporting the Gillespie County Adopt-a-County Road Litter Program!

Gillespie County Adopt-a-County Road Litter Abatement Program

Gillespie County Commissioners Court is pleased to introduce its Adopt-a-County Road Program to maintain the natural beauty of our County while decreasing the cost of litter pickup.  This program began in 2017.

This program is modeled after the very successful Adopt-a-Highway Program by the Texas Department of Transportation that has been operating in Texas since 1985, and has grown into a national and international litter-prevention effort, saving taxpayers’ dollars and keeping our right of ways clean.

The Gillespie County Adopt-a-County Road Program focuses on Gillespie County public roads to support and recognize groups and volunteers who are willing to help pick up litter on our County public roads to keep Gillespie County beautiful.

The County will:

  1. Work with the participating individual or group to identify the specific section of a County public road to be adopted.
  2. Erect at least one (1) sign on the adopted section with the participant’s name displayed.
  3. Provide safety information, trash bags, traffic control signs and safety vests.

How to apply:

Request an Application Form from the County Commissioner of your Precinct, or print the Application Form from our website (see left column).

Submit your completed Application Form to either your County Commissioner or the Rural Addressing Department, or email to LitterProgram@gillespiecounty.org. Contact information is on the Application Form.

Your County Commissioner will contact you to meet and get your Adopt-a-County-Road Program on its way. The links to the left will guide you through this new exciting litter prevention program!

How to Report a Litterer:

Even after more than 25 years of the Don’t mess with Texas® campaign, litterbugs still roam the roadways, tossing trash from their car windows and letting litter fly out of their truck beds. We’re talking about cigarette butts, fast food wrappers, and the like. They’re small, but they’re still trash.

When you witness someone littering, write down the following information:

- license plate number
- make of vehicle
- time of day
- location
- date
- who tossed the litter (driver, passenger, or accidental)
- what was tossed

Then, visit TxDOT’s Report a Litterer to report the incident.

TxDOT compares the information through the Department of Motor Vehicles registration database, and when an exact match is located, we send the litterer a Don’t mess with Texas litterbag along with a letter reminding them to keep their trash off of our roads.

And you can feel good about doing something to clean up our beloved Lone Star State.
